I have to confess, I was not interested in this book when it first came to my attention. I thought, “…written by a pretty blond—a TV news personality…how good could it be?” But then I fugured I could probably use some tuning of my “respect” characteristics, so I looked into it and became intrigued. What I learned is that, in addition to being a pretty blond and the anchor of Inside Edition, Deborah Norville is a summa cum laude graduate of the iconic University of Georgia. This is a pretty tough school to get into.

“The Power of Respect” is sort of a sequel to her 2007 book “Thank You Power.” In seven chapters and just under 200 pages she relates not just her opinion but well-documented anecdotal reports and scholarly research about how much respect is missing in American culture these days, and what it costs, “…the Most Forgotten Element of Success,” as the subtitle suggests. There are chapters for our private relationships—for parents and for spouses (or those who want to be spouses)—and also for the power of respect in business, as a leader, and in regard for oneself. So, if you think you could use some more respect—from people around you, or the respect you have toward them—you will get a good tune-up from reading Ms. Norville’s research and excellent exposition of this topic. And, I must say, she has garnered well-deserved respect from me.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their Book Review Blogger program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”
